In DreadOut, players take on the role of Linda, a character who uses modern devices like smartphones and digital cameras to interact with or repel a range of Indonesian mythological spirits as she solves puzzles in an abandoned town. The game features both third-person and first-person controls, allowing for a more immersive experience.

One of the standout mechanics in DreadOut is its use of photography, similar to the Fatal Frame series. When Linda dies, she awakens in darkness surrounded by candles with a bright light in the distance, only to find herself back in the world when she uses her camera to take a photo of the spirit that killed her.
