VMware Player 10: A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Kali Linux Virtual Machine

Creating a virtual machine using VMware Player is a straightforward process that requires careful configuration to ensure a smooth installation of Kali Linux. In this article, we will guide you through the steps required to create a Kali Linux virtual machine using VMware Player 10.

The first step in creating a new virtual machine is to select the 'Create a New Virtual Machine' option from the main menu of VMware Player. This will launch the 'Welcome to the Wizard!' screen, which prompts you to enter a name for your virtual machine. You can choose any name you like, but it's recommended to use a descriptive name that indicates the purpose of the VM.

Once you've entered a name for your virtual machine, click 'Next' to proceed to the next step. Here, you will be asked to select the guest operating system that you want to install on your virtual machine. For our purposes, we will choose 'Linux' as the guest operating system and select the latest version of Debian (which is the base distribution for Kali Linux).

The next screen asks you to select the type of installation media that you want to use to install your guest operating system. In this case, we will select 'ISO' and navigate to the location of the Kali Linux ISO file that we downloaded.

Once you've selected the installation media, click 'Next' to proceed to the next step. Here, you will be asked to configure the virtual machine's hardware settings. We recommend selecting 'Custom (advanced)' for the Virtual Machine Configuration option, as this will give us more control over the creation of the VM.

The next screen asks you to select the virtual machine's hardware compatibility level. For our purposes, we will choose 'Workstation 8.x' as the hardware compatibility level.

Finally, click 'Finish' to create your new virtual machine. VMware Player will then prompt you to enable virtualization in your BIOS/UEFI settings. This is a critical step that allows VMware to run virtual machines on your computer.

Once you've enabled virtualization in your BIOS/UEFI settings, you can start your new virtual machine and begin the installation process of Kali Linux. With these steps, you should be able to create a fully functional Kali Linux virtual machine using VMware Player 10.
